evilbeej: (Ranty Chibi Me)
OOC-Room Discussion on Marvel Unlimited MUX.

Me = Kitty.

Kitty Pryde peers at stuff related to the expelled six-year-old. "Huh. It occurs to me that outwardly-directed violence in a school environment is a byproduct of Western culture as a whole. The reason America's wretched educational system gets heard about is mostly because of guns in schools - but the behavior displayed by sociopathic students seems to be, generally, equally awful across the board. It's just that kids here [in America] have much easier access /to/ guns, and therefore the opportunities to use them. Is this totally uninformed and off-base, or does it sound valid?"

Claudia says "Well, in one sense you may have a point, Kitty, but the fact remains that if they *didn't* have access to guns they would express their violent tendencies in other ways. A knife can be just as lethal as a gun even if it's less likely that there will be large numbers of casualties."

From afar, Pete . o O ( Actually, from all I've heard, American schoolchildren are somewhat *better* behaved toward each other than British, in many cases, possibly due to the massive boarding-school issues; I think your point about easier access to guns is likely valid, though. )

You say "Yeah. That's what I'm saying. The bad behavior is standard - it's the weapons that make a difference in shock value."

Riku says "Check out instances of gun-related violence between Canada and the US. Similar cultures, much different gun control laws. I don't know what the statistics would say, but I bet it would support Kitty."

You say "The instances of gun-related school violence between Canada and the US versus the instances of equally damaging but less startling school violence between Canada and the US, yeah. I bet the first figure's got a gaping difference, and the second nearly none."

You say "It thoroughly irks me that the collective Concerned Parents' consensus opinion on the whole thing appears to be 'if we get better gun control laws the problem will go away'. Yes, better gun control would be marvellous - but well nigh impossible at this point, considering the sheer number of guns already present, both licensed and unlicensed. And gun control /laws/ would do nothing for the already illegal ones. At the same time, better gun control laws won't do jack shit for the ultimate causes of the violence, and Concerned Parents and the people making money off the educational system don't want to hear about /those/. Grrrrrr."

Kitty Pryde is just glad she was out of high school for Columbine's aftermath. :P

Tim Field [of Bully Online] says people who find themselves being cyberbullied should take seven basic steps. These are: don't respond and don't engage; keep all abusive emails (although they don't have to be read); understand bullying; get help; become alert to provocation; and become an observer. His final piece of advice is: "Decide if you want to take action, and if so, prepare carefully and strike hard."

This story is utterly horrifying, but the reporter's a comedic genius: Leave the poor psychopath alone!
