So this weekend, my dad and I went to a Bordertown wedding, I swear. It may have been physically located in Montreal, but in spirit, it couldn't have made it feel more borderlands if it tried (which it didn't; it grew quite organically).

It was the second wedding of our friend Maria Keane, originally from Mexico but living in Montreal for the better part of twenty-five years-- her husband Chris had died ten years before. And she was marrying John, a man from England but living in Montreal the past couple of years. So the wedding had relatives from Mexico and England, friends from Montreal and the States, a couple of friends from Mexico and England, and the Irish music group Maria's with. And the food was Mexican, the beer was homebrew poured from a tap screwed into a small refrigerator, the music was Irish, and all the people we didn't know had funny accents. Well actually everyone had funny accents. Us included.

And the ceremony was outside on the back balcony/porch thing, which had a wire grille roof with curtains of vines and flowers on it, and had a priest and a minister, and musicians which played irish music between bits of ceremony, and Maria's daughter Zania looked like a fairy with her dark curls bleached red-blonde and wearing a bright yellow sundress over jeans, and a lacy wrap, and her musician son and her poet son were dressed so loudly and friendly, and Maria's dress was dark blue with white embroidering on it--

And the way other people were dressed! A navy blue pinstriped velvet suit with a hawaiian shirt and bare feet; another quite stylish suit worn with a hawaiian shirt /and a fedora with a pheasant's feather/, and LEOPARD FUR DRESS SHOES, more mods and hippies than you can shake a stick at, one jock, and *all that alcohol*. And well, Montreal.

And the day was beautiful, and everything's just about half a week off of our seasonal schedule. So things were a brighter green, almost still yellowy some places, and the sun was coming through the leaves...
